Congratulations. I wish I bought you jewelry.

a little poem about one last regret

Photo by Tessa Edmiston on Unsplash

You’re married
now and I
didn’t buy you
enough jewelry
in our penny pinching 20s
was never about it
should’ve gone broke
and shattered
in different ways than I did
that mattered
burning little love offerings of silver and gold
should’ve come and gone
like we did
to every art museum in our overpriced apple
gutted gift shops, stolen earings out of every frame
wonder if you took his name
happy you’re happy all the same
—should get that tattooed
on my grave
next to all the money
that I save
with no one to buy jewelry.
